A theater’s bound to have good movies if it’s owned by a company that’s devoted to showing new independent films. IFC has a television network AND they distribute new indies, documentaries, and foreign films nationwide. They make the most of their favorable situation at the IFC Center, hosting some of the biggest NYC premieres each year. Many of the films shown here are only ever seen in theaters at IFC, your only other opportunity to see them being On Demand.
In addition to new films, IFC Center is also known for showing classic movies on weekends. and monthly Midnight Movie screenings of cult films. It’s at those screenings where the community of movie-lovers really comes together. IFC Center is well-known enough that the attendees are unprotective of cultural discovery. There’s little snarkiness or exclusivity and premieres can be just as crowded at IFC as at your local multiplex. It’s easy to just go inside and be just as knowledgeable as everyone else.
Downtown on Sixth Avenue, IFC’s bright marquee is an imposing presence. You can’t miss it, so head on in as soon as its light illuminates your path of sidewalk. On the BRINK will keep you up to date on the best showings at IFC Center and all their under-publicized events.
